TOP 10 Ways To Celebrate the Sabbath

Happy Shabbat!

Are you curious about how to celebrate Shabbat? Shabbat is the Hebrew word for Sabbath, the day of rest that YHWH (Adonai) commanded in the Ten Commandments. Messianics are believers in Yeshua (Jesus) who also observe the Torah and the Jewish traditions. In this blog post, we will explore the TOP 10 ways Messianics celebrate Shabbat and how they honor Adonai and His Word.

1. Light candles and say blessings. Messianics usually light two candles on Friday evening before sunset to welcome Shabbat. They also say blessings over the wine, bread, and children, thanking Adonai for His goodness and grace.

2. Enjoy a festive meal. Messianics often prepare a special meal for Shabbat, with dishes like chicken soup, roast beef, challah bread, and kugel. They also sing songs of praise and worship during the meal, expressing their joy and gratitude to Adonai.

3. Read the Torah portion and discuss it. Messianics follow the Jewish cycle of reading the Torah (the first five books of the Bible) every year. They read a portion of the Torah every week and discuss its meaning and application to their lives.

4. Pray together and intercede for others. Messianics believe in the power of prayer and intercession. They pray together as a family or a congregation on Shabbat, asking Adonai for His guidance, protection, healing, and provision. They also pray for Israel, the Jewish people, and the nations of the world.

5. Rest from work and worldly activities. Messianics observe Shabbat as a day of rest from their regular work and worldly activities. They refrain from doing anything that would distract them from focusing on Adonai and His Word. They also avoid using technology, such as phones, computers, or TVs, unless it is necessary or beneficial for their spiritual growth.

6. Spend quality time with family and friends. Messianics cherish Shabbat as a time to bond with their family and friends. They visit each other's homes, share meals, play games, or go for walks. They also encourage and edify one another with testimonies, scriptures, and prophetic words.

7. Attend a messianic congregation or fellowship. Messianics often attend a messianic congregation or fellowship on Shabbat, where they worship Adonai with Hebrew songs and dances, listen to teachings from the Torah and the New Testament, and celebrate the Lord's Supper. They also fellowship with other Messianics who share their faith and culture.

8. Study the Bible and other Jewish writings. Messianics love to study the Bible and other Jewish writings on Shabbat, such as the Talmud, the Midrash, or the Zohar. They seek to deepen their understanding of Adonai's Word and His ways through these ancient sources of wisdom and insight.

9. Do acts of kindness and charity. Messianics follow the example of Yeshua (Jesus) who did good deeds on Shabbat, such as healing the sick, feeding the hungry, or freeing the oppressed. They look for opportunities to serve others in need on Shabbat, whether it is by giving food, clothing, money, or a helping hand.

10. Celebrate Havdalah at the end of Shabbat. Messianics mark the end of Shabbat with a ceremony called Havdalah, which means "separation" in Hebrew. They light a braided candle, smell fragrant spices, drink wine, and say blessings over these elements. They thank Adonai for Shabbat and ask Him to bless them in the coming week.

These are some of the ways you can celebrate Shabbat and honor Adonai as their Creator and Redeemer. If you are interested in learning more about Messianic beliefs and practices, feel free to contact us or visit our website for more information.
